Time lapse movie of meiosis II in spermatocytes of the Locust Psophus stridulus showing two sequences that include metaphase and anaphase. This is a historic movie made in the early 40s by Kurt Michel of the Zeiss company in Jena using Zernike's newly invented phase contrast microscope. Despite its early date, the movie and the others in the group remain some of the clearest examples of chromosome behavior during meiosis.
The movie was originally recorded on 35mm film, and later transferred to CD format. The text at the beginning of the movie translates approximately as follows: Meiosis division II, metaphase (ca. 4-5 hr) and anaphase (ca. 1 hr). See also: Michel, K.
