The figure shows the beginning of the cytopharyngeal ribs of the ribbed wall. The peristome is bordered on one side by the paroral kinety that has 2 rows of basal bodies, of which only one is ciliated. The peristome is a deep funnel shaped indentation that leads to the cytostome and on to the nascent food vacuole forming region. Also seen are the oral polykineties and the perioral kineties. TEM taken on 6/13/69 by R. Allen with Philips 300 operating at 60kV. Neg. 4,270X.
Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The raw negative was scanned with an Epson Perfection V750 Pro and this high resolution image is best used for quantitative analysis.
