The top of the cytopharyngeal basket showing a closed cytostome where food will be engulfed. In the lab Nassula was fed Phormidium inundatum, a cyanobacterium. Ingested food is seen in food vacuoles as intensely stained blobs which are in various stages of digestion. TEM taken on 4/1/69 by R. Allen with Philips 300 operating at 60kV. Neg. 4,270X.
Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm. The raw negative was scanned with an Epson Perfection V750 Pro and this high resolution image is best used for quantitative analysis.
