Light micrograph of volvox. Volvox are a relatively large (approximately 500 µm) green algae. They consist of hollow spherical colonies with up to 15,000 cells embedded in their gelatinous walls. Each cell within the colony has a chloroplast, two flagella and a red 'eyespot'. The locomotory cells of volvox globator are rather irregularly spaced, with protoplasmic interconnections seen here connecting the cells. Smaller daughter colonies, sexual or asexual, may be seen swimming within the parent coenobium. Two parent coenobium can been seen as large slightly out of focus green masses in this image.
