Description

Single microtubules extend into the cytoplasm from the tips of the cytoproct ridge. These are thought to come to lie along the surface of the approaching DV-IV and to pull the ridge down against the DV-IV and to permit the plasma membrane at the crest of the ridge to fuse with the tubular extensions of the DV-IV. (Published and discussed in Allen and Wolf, J. Cell Sci. 14:611-631, 1974). TEM taken on 6/1/73 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A operating at 75kV. Neg. 18,500X. Bar = 0.25µm. Adapted with permission.

Technical Details

Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The negative was printed to paper and the image was scanned to Photoshop. This digitized image is available for qualitative analysis. There is a high resolution version of this image in the library (CIL:39202) which is available for quantitative analysis. Additional information available at (http://www5.pbrc.hawaii.edu/allen/).
