Description

One important function of the filamentous reticulum is to provide for the anchorage of cytopharyngeal microtubular ribbons along the left lip of the cytopharynx. This micrograph shows two ribbons arising out of the reticulum and shows that discoidal vesicles are transported up to this reticulum and to the fingerlike extensions of the alveoli that traverse through this edge to get to the cytostomal cord. The accessory microtubular ribbons composed of 4-7 microtubules arising from the dorsal edge of the quadrulus are seen to the left of the micrograph. Although abutting the ends of the cytopharyngeal ribbons they are not continuous with these latter microtubules. TEM taken on 4/4/74 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A operating at 75kV. Neg. 26,750X. Bar = 0.2µm.

Technical Details

Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The negative was printed to paper and the image was scanned to Photoshop. This digitized image is available for qualitative analysis.
