Cross sections of striated bands and infraciliary lattice arms. Filaments of the striated bands are less densely packed than the infraciliary lattice. Kinetodesmal fibers and postciliary microtubules are also cross sectioned and are seen to come to lie near each other in the lateral ridges. A linkage would provide additional strength to the kineties. The observer is looking at a cross section of the cell from the posterior toward the anterior of the cell. TEM taken on 6/28/69 by R. Allen with Philips 300 operating at 60kV. Neg. 36,500X. Bar = 0.1µm.
Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. The negative was printed to paper and the image was scanned to Photoshop. This digitized image is available for qualitative analysis. There is a high resolution version of this image in the library (CIL:39309) which is available for quantitative analysis. Additional information available at (http://www5.pbrc.hawaii.edu/allen/).
