Description

In the basal region of polarized epithelium engaged in ion transport, mitochondria are lodged between the interdigitating membranes of neighboring cells. This example is of a transverse section through epithelium of the distal convoluted tubule in the guinea pig kidner, and a section of the subjacent peritubular capillary. Figure 258 from Chapter 7 (Mitochondria) of 'The Cell, 2nd Ed.' by Don W. Fawcett M.D. Image courtesy of Atsushi Ichikawa.
